Guidelines for Contributors to The Wealthy Freelancer

Contributors to The Wealthy Freelancer are either established freelance professionals or work directly with freelancers to help them improve their businesses. They are recognized leaders in their field-whether it’s graphic design, copywriting, photography, public relations, business development, sales, financial planning, work-life balance…you name it.

While diverse in their backgrounds, what unites these professionals is their passion for helping others live the “wealthy freelancer” lifestyle.

If this describes you-and if you’d like to contribute a blog post to The Wealthy Freelancer-we ask that you read and follow the guidelines below before submitting your work.

What We’re Looking For

Applicability: All contributed blog posts must either focus specifically on freelancers or be highly applicable to freelancers. If a story or application to freelance professionals is not clear, you must clearly articulate how it applies to helping freelancers live a wealthy lifestyle.

Core Topics: We like to publish a wide range of article topics-from thought-provoking “big idea” pieces to practical how-to articles. However, keep in mind that our readers are looking for useful content they can apply immediately.

We also welcome inspirational success stories and “lessons learned” articles. Powerful ideas that come straight from the trenches often make a powerful post.

Fresh Ideas and Viewpoints: We realize that some topics will always be relevant and useful. But what our readers are looking for are original and interesting viewpoints on those topics, not a rehash of the same material everyone else is writing about.

Compelling Writing: Writing that grabs readers and keeps them engaged is always welcome. So is writing that is clear, readable and flows well. If it’s choppy, wordy, structured poorly or boring, we won’t be able to publish your article.

Revisions: In order to maintain the high standards our readers expect from The Wealthy Freelancer, most of the posts we publish undergo some degree of editing. It’s not personal. In fact, this includes articles that we write ourselves. We hope you understand this and are willing to work with us in the editing process.

Self Promotion: In an effort to maintain the integrity of The Wealthy Freelancer, we’re looking for thought-provoking and useful blog posts, not promotional copy. Please realize that if anything crosses that fine line, we will have to either remove or edit that part of your article. Furthermore, egregious self-promotion may keep your article from being published.

Besides the obvious, please refrain from borderline promotional language such as:

  • “In my coaching program, a student said that he…”
  • “When I wrote my e-book on…”
  • “During my recent presentation at the Seattle Freelancers Annual Conference…”

Byline: Please include a short byline with your article. Bylines are limited to 70 characters and two web links.

Article Length: Please keep your submission between 300 to 500 words. We may occasionally consider longer pieces if it would make sense to split them up into a two-part article.

Submit: Email your article in a Microsoft Word document, preferably with minimal formatting. No PDF files, please.

Ownership: Copyright is retained by the writer, not The Wealthy Freelancer.

Compensation: We do not pay for articles. However, we will let you add a 35 word bio at the end of your post and, if you become a regular contributor, will also feature a longer version of that bio on our The Team page.
